Understanding CBC
The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is Kenya's new education system designed to develop learners' competencies rather than just content knowledge. It focuses on what learners can do, not just what they know.
At Pinnacle High School, we have fully embraced CBC while ensuring a smooth transition from the 8-4-4 system. Our approach balances competency development with academic excellence.
CBC is structured in three levels at secondary school: Junior Secondary (Grades 7-9) and Senior Secondary (Grades 10-12) with three pathways in Senior Secondary.

Senior School Pathways

CBC Frequently Asked Questions
The first CBC cohort will join Senior Secondary (Grade 10) in 2026. At Pinnacle High School, we are already preparing our facilities and teachers for this transition.
While pathway selection is meant to be final, there is limited flexibility for students to switch pathways during Grade 10 if it becomes clear they have chosen incorrectly. This requires consultation with teachers, parents, and career counselors.
CBC develops critical thinking, research skills, and practical competencies that universities value. Each pathway leads to relevant university programs, and we ensure students meet entry requirements for their chosen fields.
CBC includes practical skills that prepare students for technical careers, entrepreneurship, or vocational training. Each pathway develops marketable skills for various career paths beyond university.
The first CBC KCSE will be in 2029. Assessment will include school-based assessments (projects, practicals) and national examinations. KNEC is developing appropriate assessment methods for CBC.
